We Will Rock You in Boston

So Allison (bass player of Gunpowder Gelatine), her awesome wife Amanda, and I got dinner and saw the musical tonight. Ordinarily, I'd wait until the next day to make a post so that my thoughts are collected and fully formed. But I don't think I need to for this.

I will say, before anything else, that the cast's overall musical performance and the accompanying band were really good. However, I wasn't too impressed with the storyline or dance moves (to be fair, I'm not big on choreography in general). By no means am I an expert in musical theater, so it's likely that I really don't know what I'm talking about (I mean, We Will Rock You is over a decade old, so they must be doing something right, right?). But I am a movie geek, so I hope my standards for story structure and plot sort of translate?

Don't worry, I'm not going to spoil anything. But I will say the pop culture references felt forced and the ending was anti-climactic. I wasn't expecting to see the most awesome thing to ever awesome, but it was sad how disappointing those parts were. I probably couldn't do any better if Brian and Roger were to ask me (guys, if you're reading, we should totally hang out, though!), but as a die-hard fan who's heard a lot of hype about this show over the years, I'm sure it's not unreasonable for me to expect a bit better.

Overall, I'm really glad I had the opportunity to go, because my friends are awesome, and it was an entertaining show overall. My dislikes weren't enough for me to completely hate it. But I can definitely see why Roger isn't too keen on it. Maybe I'll have to consider Freddie's words about his music being disposable pop and apply it to this.

But Killer Queen (played by Jacqueline B Arnold) was awesome. Seriously. She gets all the gold stars for her performance.

Aside from gabbing about Queen with Allison (Amanda referred to us as "über fans"), my favorite part of the evening was what was in the lobby of the Boston Opera House!

FREDDIE'S KIMONO!!!

LIKE, THAT HE ACTUALLY WORE!!!

Me and Allison. Amanda was kind enough to take pictures :-)

All in all, not a bad way to spend a Tuesday night!

October is awesome, revisited

Between meeting my counterpart, meeting and getting Brian May's autograph, going to see Gunpowder Gelatine at the end of the month, getting a LOT of Tumblr followers (hi, folks!), and my cat willingly sitting in my lap yesterday (she's snuggly, and she'll curl up on my chest, but laps have never seemed to be her thing), I thought I had raked in all the awesome possible for this month! But then I got an email this morning from a friend I pet sit for, offering to buy me a ticket to We Will Rock You in Boston!

Hello, Zander --
Are you interested in seeing the play, "We Will Rock You"? It is playing at the Boston Opera House.
Discounted tickets are available right now on Goldstar and Toni and I would like to give you a mezzanine ticket as a cat-sitter-thank-you. The date available is Tues., Nov. 5th at 7:00pm.
But we understand if you don't want to go alone, or hoof it into the city solo, or if the date does not work for you, so don't feel obligated to say yes.

Tell me what works for you!

My cool and dignified response...

YES! OMG THANK YOU!

I'm a believer in karma, so now I'm wondering what I did to deserve such wonderful friends and opportunities. I'm also wondering if maybe something terrible is about to happen (not counting Lou Reed's passing yesterday. RIP) and my interpretation of G-d is trying to soften the blow! But I'm trying to put my cynicism aside, ignore the pervasive thoughts that come with debilitating anxiety and depression, and appreciate what's happening.

You can listen to this while you read about my adventure, if you feel so inclined :-)

(ETA - Lou Reed passed away on October 27, 2013. RIP)

OMG, YOU GUYS!!! YOU GUYS, OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!

You guys!!!

AAAAAAHHHH!!!!!

Okay, okay. I think I'm good now. ... Maybe? ... Yeah, I'm good!

So yesterday, I got to meet my counterpart for the first time! Because it always needs to be emphasized - we've been talking to each other online (and occasionally on the phone) since 1998. You'd think we'd find time to hang out since I moved to Boston, because it's so much closer to NYC than the flat lands outside of Chicago. But it just couldn't seem to happen until yesterday!

Due to circumstances outside of anyone's control, I could only stay for the day, but I honestly didn't care at all. There will be other times to be a tourist, but yesterday I had a mission! I got into NYC around 3:30pm and finally met Audrey around 4:00! We hugged for a couple minutes and I gave her her present - burned DVDs of Magic Years vols. 1-3. The event wasn't starting until 7:00, so we decided to get food before heading over to the bookstore. I cannot describe how awesome it was to be sitting with her and talking about Queen and Freddie! I have a good time doing that with pretty much anybody, but this was special, dammit! 12 year-old me would have been just as excited as I was!

We tried to see if we could buy the book before getting in line, but one of the people on staff said that we could, and then someone else said we couldn't, so we just waited in line. It was fun and interesting meeting people Audrey knew from the times she went to Breakthru 2001 and '02 - including her friend Gareth, and meeting other hardcore fans. Also, quick aside, everyone I've encountered in the city has been kind, funny, and courteous. Boston has its share of great people, but then there are the assholes who will shove past you on the T (subway system) even though it's the last stop on the train, roll their eyes when a pregnant person asks for a seat on the bus, etc. But we all come together in our hatred for students when they're coming in from other parts of the country to go to school (because it's totally smart to stop in the middle of a cross-walk on a busy street in Harvard (Hahvahd!) Square to take a group photo or consult your map for directions). But I digress.

Thankfully, the line wasn't too long when we got there, because I didn't want to have to miss out on this part of my mission due to lack of space in the room. At one point, we saw that Brian had entered the store, and Audrey pointed to the window where I could only see the top of his hair. I. Was. Dumbstruck. I couldn't make words for maybe a whole minute. Audrey laughed at me, so I picked on her. "Oh, you've met Brian a couple times before, so now you're pretty much over it?"

Eventually, we were escorted to an elevator to go to the Rare Book Room to buy books and watch the presentation. I cringed shelling out $60 for it, but it came with Brian's Owl stereoscopic viewer, and he and the other authors were going to sign it, so it was worth it. I don't have a problem living off of especially cheap food for a little while!

We were given 3-D glasses for the presentation, which was fun. I didn't know quite what to expect, but the pictures shown and explained were stunning! I couldn't help but think that some of them could have been contenders for the cover of Innuendo. And hearing all the authors talking about this particular passion and throwing in some Queen references and puns made it very entertaining for me. Near the end, I started getting a headache, so I had to take off the 3-D glasses, but that didn't make me appreciate the craft that goes into stereoscopic photography any less.

And here's a shot with the zoom, just in case my phone didn't capture the awesome.

Finally we got to get our stuff signed! I had brought a Gunpowder Gelatine flier, but I wasn't totally sure if he'd be willing to sign it. He did, though, so the band is going to have to figure out some sort of time-share arrangement amongst themselves ;-) I also got to give him my hand-written letter (I thought about typing it up to post here, but I like it better that it's an interaction just between me and Brian. I let Audrey read it though, but she's entitled to that sort of treatment). It's nothing creepy, though! I promise! It was basically just thanking him for being such a presence in my life, and also thanking him for his non-Queen-related endeavors, because it probably really sucks for him to take the spotlight away from others who've had equal contribution in something he's done. He saw Audrey standing behind me to take pictures, and I explained that she and I first met in the fan club chatroom, and had met in person after 15 years. You guys, he said that that was amazing!!! BRIAN MAY THINKS WE'RE AMAZING!!!

I asked if I could get a picture with all of the authors, thinking that the bookstore staff would yell at me to move it the hell along, but everyone happily complied! And I got next to Brian and crouched down, and suddenly I felt his hand pat my shoulder! YOU GUYS!!!!!

And here's Gunpowder Gelatine's flier. I think he initially thought it was a promo for A Day At The Races, but at second glance, Brian did a, "Oh, cool!" face, so I hope that means he'll get really curious and check them out on Youtube later. Because how awesome would that be??? I'm going to give them the flier at their Halloween concert, and I'm really excited that I got to do something so cool for them!

Afterwards, Audrey and I hung out outside with some other fans and chatted, hoping to catch Brian on his way out. There was one person we bonded with, whose name I sadly can't remember right now (her name is Tracey! Hi, Tracey!), but Audrey and I got a picture with them, and I asked permission to post it later. So here it is!

Their hand-painted jacket (which took two years for her to paint, if I remember correctly) got the attention of a passer-by, and so this stranger got to join in the bonding and conversation. Brian wound up sneaking out the side door (well played, sir!), and Audrey and I made the trek back to my bus stop. I got to look at Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building, ride a couple stops on the subway, and share a bit of a pretzel with Audrey along the way. Oh well. I spent the next four hours on Mega Bus posting pictures on Facebook (yay for smart phones!) and asking myself if that all really did just happen. But it did! I couldn't make this up if I tried!

OCTOBER IS AWESOME!!!

Things to do tomorrow(!!!!):

11am - take the bus from Boston to NYC.
3:30pm - arrive in NYC and meet my counterpart/Queen soulmate/fellow Mercury Guru, Audrey, for the first time (she's, uh, kind of a badass), try not to cry.
7pm - meet Brian May, get his autograph, buy his book, try not to cry.
11pm - take the bus from NYC back to Boston.
3:30am - take a cab home because Boston's public transportation does not run 24/7. Count my blessings that I'll be missing Red Sox traffic (Go, Sox!)
4am - either stay up due to the excitement of the day, or pass out in my bed. Still haven't decided.

I can make no promises, but I'll be bringing a Gunpowder Gelatine flier that I'm hoping Brian will sign, and a button-down shirt my friend Toni gave me, so it will be like they're experiencing this magical day with me. And a hand-written letter for Brian, in case I won't be able to actually speak to him due to crying or whatever. I'm also still trying to figure out how to work Taylor's Fred-A-Thon smoothly into our conversation, per his request!

And then...

Halloween night, I'll be back at Johnny D's to see Gunpowder Gelatine! WAY too much to look forward to this month!

Examiner says Daniel Radcliffe should play Freddie

... Er, well, they actually misspell it. But this article is pretty interesting. For one, I agree with the statement: Any biographical attempt to feature Mercury's life must not have an internal auto-censorship mechanism. A life lived must be portrayed without a PR touch up. Warts and all.

I realize this is controversial on my part, but if the biopic is ever going to happen, I'd rather it not be a total bastardization of Freddie. I've seen a made-for-TV movie about John Lennon that mainly focused on his life with Yoko, and his faults were massively downplayed. I don't want Freddie to be portrayed as a saint or a sinner. What I love about him - even more than any of his musical contributions to the world - was him. The man. The guy who didn't prance around on stage like a fucking god. The man who curled up on his couch once in a while to watch black-and-white films. I want to see Freddie's memory honored with dignity. Anything less or more than who he actually was on or off-stage would be a slap in the face.

Also, real quick? I'm getting fed up with the press giving Freddie crap for not announcing his AIDS status sooner (I can only seem to read the "who only revealed the fact that he was suffering from AIDS a short time before his death." as hostile and judgmental). Being HIV-positive, and/or gay, and/or trans, and/or gender fluid, and/or disabled, and/or a person of color, etc., for that matter, does not obligate one to be an ambassador or an educator to be put on display for others.

But anyway! I'm hoping that if Dan Radcliffe does sign on for the project, that the script do him justice. He's a great actor AND doesn't do that "no homo!" bullshit a lot of straight actors do when they play gay roles (On the Logo network some years ago, when Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are asked which of the scenes in Brokeback Mountain were their favorites to film: "the ones where I'm kissing/fucking [actress]! Obviously!" Yeah, dudes. We get it. Now shut grow up). And it's sad, in 2013, that that's so refreshing (Johnny Galecki is also that awesome).

At this point, it's hard to know what direction the biopic will take, and who's definitely cast. And while Harry Potter doesn't look like Freddie, he definitely has the capability to play him.

I'm just going to leave this... right... here.

Fred-A-Thon 2013

On Freddie's birthday, Taylor Abrahamse put on a hell of a show to raise money for The Mercury Phoenix Trust! From 1pm-8pm, he planned on playing every Queen song, plus Freddie's solo material.

He tried to video record the show, but that didn't pan out, unfortunately. But it was fun to watch online, even when the web broadcast crapped out a couple times. It reminded me a lot of Queen's 1985 show(s?) where every technical thing went wrong, and I really admired his ability to keep his cool. Because I would have been absolutely furious at my inability to control that sort of situation.

And also, it was nice getting to discuss Queen with other people who were watching online as well!I wish Taylor hadn't been busy rocking out, because I could see us having a fun and spirited debate over some of Roger's tracks from the 70's (no disrespect, but I can't wrap my head around someone not liking Drowse :-P). But then he might not have raised $150 for MPT, so...

My only complaint (that I think is petty, but I'll say it anyway) about the performance was close to the end when another guy got up to perform Fat Bottomed Girls, Love Of My Life, and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. I think part of it was my attention span starting to give out, and the fact that Taylor had played them earlier, so I was “over it” by that point.

I took the liberty of writing down the setlist as it was happening, because I figured it would help me remember what to write about, and now I'm going to paste it here, because maybe you're curious, too. Some tracks were skipped due to time constraints, technical difficulties, and probably just plain not wanting to play them, in some cases.

Where's the love, Amazon?

I got a devastating email from Amazon the other other day that they could not post my review of my latest poster purchase. Probably because I included the word "ass", but I'm going to instead chalk it up to them not being fun*.

"It's a big-ass poster of Queen. What more needs to be said? ... Well, Amazon says I need eight more words. Is that enough? Oh, good!"

I may be a bit biased here, but I'd definitely find that review helpful, had I not already purchased that poster. Oh well.

*J/K Amazon. As far as heartless corporations go, I love you a lot :-)
